Episode 57 of the SERVICOM Help Desk Radio Programme which held on 7th March 2019 featured the National Hospital, Abuja (NHA). The Deputy Chairperson, Medical Advisory Committee, Dr. Aisha Umar and SERVICOM’s Nodal Officer/HOD, Information Services, Dr. Tayo Haastrup were in the studio for the second time.
SERVICOM National Coordinator Mrs. Nnenna Akajemeli recalled the previous day’s discussion and said the Team from the National Hospital was again in the studio to respond to questions and issues on the services of the Hospital.
Dr. Aisha said patients who are taken to Accident and Emergency Unit of the Hospital receive immediate attention while those who are on appointment are directed to the clinics in the Hospital which are over 20 in number.
She further explained that the hospital has introduced electronic appointments in the General Out Patients Department (GOPD) and that doctors attend to patients from morning till 8pm daily. She advised patients to keep to their appointment.
Revisiting the issue of high mortality rate in the hospital, Dr. Haastrup said some patients are brought in dead and the blame still goes to the hospital. He also appealed to patients to talk to nurses and doctors with courtesy.
Outside the studio, the National Coordinator and Dr. Aisha Umar were approached by one Mr. Isaac Odum whose wife had put to birth at the National Hospital but he did not have the sum of three hundred and fifty thousand naira (N350, 000) to pay for her to be discharged.
Dr. Aisha directed Mr. Odum to write an undertaking and bring to her office the following day (7th March 2019). She said he should commit himself to the payment of Ten Thousand Naira (N10, 000) every month so that he would be granted a waiver.
